Mittermaier Consulting Services (MCS) was appointed by PT Asmin Bara Bronang to provide design engineering and project management services for a coal moisture reduction project at the ABB II coal washing facility in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia.
The project involves the integration of a new coarse coal dewatering centrifuge into the existing processing facility, together with associated materials handling, supporting infrastructure and plant modifications.
As a brownfield engineering assignment, the project requires integration with existing process equipment, conveying systems, structural arrangements, electrical infrastructure and instrumentation and control systems.
MCS acts as the lead engineering coordinator, providing process engineering, multidisciplinary design management, specialist consultant coordination and technical oversight throughout the detailed engineering development.
MCS Scope of Services
MCS was appointed to provide design engineering and project management services, coordinating the technical development of the centrifuge installation and its integration into the existing processing facility.
The scope encompasses:
- Process Engineering & Design Basis: Development and review of process requirements, equipment design criteria, operating conditions and the engineering Basis of Design.
- Equipment Specification & Vendor Coordination: Preparation and coordination of technical requirements, centrifuge equipment tendering, vendor evaluations and equipment selection activities.
- Multidisciplinary Detailed Engineering: Coordination of mechanical, civil, structural, electrical, instrumentation and control engineering associated with the installation.
- Conveyor & Chute Integration: Engineering coordination of material transfer arrangements, including centrifuge feed and discharge interfaces with existing plant infrastructure.
- Plant Layout & Structural Integration: Assessment of available installation space, equipment support requirements, access arrangements and interfaces with existing structures.
- Engineering Project Management: Project scheduling, engineering deliverable management, design reviews, specialist consultant coordination and technical interface management.
- Technical Documentation & Quality Review: Review and coordination of engineering calculations, specifications, drawings and supporting technical deliverables.
Engineering & Project Execution
The project involves integrating additional dewatering equipment into an operational coal processing facility, requiring careful consideration of existing plant constraints and multidisciplinary engineering interfaces.
Process Design & Equipment Integration
The engineering development commenced with the establishment of process requirements, equipment selection criteria and the design basis for the proposed centrifuge installation.
Particular attention was given to the relationship between operating throughput, equipment design capacity and the requirements for reliable integration with upstream and downstream processing equipment.
Multidisciplinary Design Coordination
MCS coordinates the engineering interfaces between process equipment, conveyor and chute systems, mechanical installations, supporting steelwork, civil structures, electrical infrastructure and instrumentation and control systems.
Specialist engineering consultants support the development of detailed technical deliverables under MCS’s overall engineering coordination and project management.
Equipment & Specialist Engineering Interfaces
The project requires technical coordination with equipment suppliers and specialist engineers to ensure that equipment specifications, installation arrangements, materials handling interfaces and associated engineering documentation are compatible.
The detailed engineering process incorporates technical reviews, design development, engineering verification and coordinated document management.
Technical Challenges & Project Highlights
Brownfield Plant Integration
Integrating new processing equipment into an existing coal washing facility requires careful assessment of available space, existing structural arrangements, process interfaces and operational accessibility.
The engineering approach addresses installation constraints while considering maintainability, equipment access and compatibility with existing infrastructure.
Materials Handling & Process Interface Design
The centrifuge installation requires coordinated design of the associated feed and discharge arrangements.
Material transfer geometry, equipment positioning, conveyor interfaces and chute configurations form important considerations in achieving a technically integrated design.
Design Capacity & Engineering Basis
An important aspect of the engineering development is maintaining an appropriate equipment and system design basis while accommodating variations between nominal design conditions and normal operating requirements.
This requires engineering judgement across process, mechanical and materials handling disciplines.
Integrated Multidisciplinary Engineering Management
MCS coordinates specialist engineering resources, equipment suppliers and the client’s technical representatives to manage design interfaces, deliverables, technical reviews and project schedules.
The assignment demonstrates MCS’s capabilities in brownfield process plant engineering, multidisciplinary design coordination, specialist equipment integration and engineering project management.
