ABB II — Coal Handling & Processing Plant

Owner’s EPCM Project Management & Technical Advisory Services | Indonesia | 2022–2026

Project Overview

Client: PT Asmin Bara Bronang (ABB II)
Location: Central Kalimantan, Indonesia
Industry: Mining & Mineral Processing
Plant Capacity: 2.5 MTPA (500 tph nominal)
MCS Involvement: 2022–2026
Services: Owner’s EPCM Project Management & Technical Advisory

Mittermaier Consulting Services (MCS) was appointed by PT Asmin Bara Bronang to provide owner’s project management and technical advisory services for the development of a 2.5 million tonnes per annum coal handling and processing facility in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia.

The project involved the development and integration of a multidisciplinary processing facility incorporating screening, dense medium separation, bulk materials handling, product dewatering, process water management and associated mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and automation systems.

Acting as the client’s project management team, MCS coordinated engineering, procurement, construction management and commissioning-stage activities across multiple specialist consultants, equipment suppliers and construction contractors.

The assignment extended from early project development and contracting strategy through engineering, construction planning, multidisciplinary site supervision and commissioning support.

MCS Scope of Services

MCS provided integrated owner’s-side project management and technical advisory services throughout the engineering and project execution phases.

The contractual scope encompassed:

  • Project Management & Control: Project planning, scheduling, cost and scope management, progress monitoring, stakeholder coordination and reporting.
  • Engineering & Technical Advisory: Project requirements, design-basis development and review, engineering specifications, multidisciplinary technical coordination and engineering interface management.
  • Contracting & Procurement Management: Contracting strategy, procurement coordination, technical evaluations, equipment supplier interfaces and contractor management.
  • Construction Planning & Supervision: Construction scheduling, multidisciplinary site supervision, progress verification and coordination of civil, structural, mechanical, piping, electrical, instrumentation and automation activities.
  • Quality Assurance & Equipment Inspection: Equipment quality-control coordination, receiving inspections, installation verification and technical compliance monitoring.
  • Commissioning & Start-up Support: Commissioning planning, supervision, testing coordination, technical verification and management of outstanding engineering and installation issues.
  • Project HSE Support: Site HSE resources and coordination within the client’s established health, safety and environmental management framework.

Engineering & Project Execution

The ABB II project required coordinated execution across multiple engineering disciplines, international equipment suppliers and local construction contractors.

Project Development & Contracting Strategy

MCS supported the development and implementation of a project-specific contracting strategy, establishing distinct engineering, equipment supply and construction work packages.

The contracting approach required structured coordination of technical specifications, engineering deliverables, procurement schedules and contractor interfaces throughout project execution.

Multidisciplinary Engineering Management

MCS provided engineering management and technical oversight across the facility’s principal processing and supporting infrastructure systems.

The work involved coordination between process, mechanical, civil, structural, electrical, instrumentation and automation engineering disciplines, with particular emphasis on system integration and technical interface management.

Construction & Commissioning Coordination

MCS coordinated construction planning, progress monitoring, site supervision and equipment quality-control activities on behalf of the client.

Commissioning-stage support included installation verification, cold and wet commissioning activities, hot commissioning coordination and technical assessment of outstanding engineering and operational issues.

Technical Challenges & Project Highlights

Complex Multidisciplinary Integration

The facility incorporated multiple interconnected processing systems supplied and constructed through separate contractual packages. Effective technical interface management was essential to coordinating engineering requirements, installation activities and system integration.

International Procurement & Remote Project Execution

The remote location in Central Kalimantan presented logistical, procurement and construction-management challenges. MCS coordinated international supplier interfaces, technical documentation, equipment inspections and multidisciplinary site execution activities.

Independent Owner’s-Side Project Management

MCS provided an integrated project management function representing the client’s technical and project delivery interests. This included project controls, multidisciplinary coordination, technical advisory services, construction supervision and commissioning-stage oversight.

The assignment demonstrates MCS’s capability to manage complex industrial engineering projects across international project teams, specialist contractors and demanding site environments.
