Stark Resources — Fluorspar Processing Plant Site Audit

Engineering Site Audit, 3D Laser Scanning & Automation Concept Development | Tajikistan | 2022

Project Overview

Client: Stark Resources
Location: Tajikistan, Central Asia
Industry: Mining & Mineral Processing
Project Year: 2022
Services: Engineering Site Audit, 3D Laser Scanning, Plant Condition Assessment & Automation Concept Development
Contracting Entity: Eptoscore (Pty) Ltd, South Africa
Project Status: Completed

Stark Resources appointed Eptoscore to undertake an engineering site audit and technical assessment of an existing fluorspar processing plant in Tajikistan.

The primary objective was to establish a reliable engineering information base for the development of a plant improvement and automation concept, with the longer-term intention of enabling the facility to operate at its nameplate design capacity.

The assignment required the collection, verification and compilation of existing plant information, supported by on-site engineering assessments, three-dimensional laser scanning and the evaluation of mechanical equipment condition.

A central component of the project was the development of a comprehensive virtual plant model, providing a digital representation of the existing facility for engineering evaluation and subsequent project development.

The engineering audit was completed within the agreed project timeline, providing Stark Resources with the technical information and concept-design deliverables required to progress its plant improvement initiatives.

Scope of Services

Eptoscore provided a multidisciplinary engineering site audit and assessment covering five principal deliverables:

  • Engineering Documentation Review & Conversion: Interpretation and conversion of the existing plant design documentation and engineering drawings from Russian into English.
  • 3D Laser Scanning & Virtual Plant Modelling: Three-dimensional laser scanning of the complete processing facility and development of a virtual reality model with walkthrough and measurement capabilities.
  • Automation Concept Development: Preparation of an automation concept design to support the proposed improvement and automation of the existing processing plant.
  • Surveillance System Concept Design: Development of a surveillance system concept as part of the proposed plant infrastructure improvements.
  • Mechanical Equipment Condition Assessment: Compilation of a mechanical equipment register, including equipment condition assessments, photographic records and recommended spare parts.

These activities established an engineering reference for evaluating the existing installation and developing the proposed plant upgrade.

Engineering & Project Execution

Engineering Information Assessment & Documentation Conversion

The project commenced with the review and interpretation of existing engineering information for the fluorspar processing facility.

An important requirement was the conversion of the original Russian-language plant design documentation and engineering drawings into English to support subsequent engineering evaluation and project development.

The converted documentation formed part of the consolidated technical information prepared for Stark Resources.

3D Laser Scanning & Virtual Plant Modelling

A comprehensive three-dimensional laser scan was undertaken across the processing facility to capture the physical arrangement of the existing plant.

The resulting spatial information was used to develop a virtual reality model incorporating interactive walkthrough and measurement functionality.

This digital representation provided an important engineering reference for understanding existing equipment arrangements, plant structures and spatial relationships.

The virtual model supported the evaluation of the existing facility and provided information suitable for further engineering design and implementation planning.

Automation & Surveillance Concept Development

The engineering assessment included preparation of an automation concept design for the existing processing facility.

The objective was to establish a technical basis for progressing the plant towards improved automation and operation at its nameplate design capacity.

A surveillance system concept was also prepared as part of the engineering deliverables.

These concept designs provided Stark Resources with information for evaluating and developing the proposed plant improvements.

Mechanical Equipment Condition Assessment

The site audit incorporated the identification and assessment of existing mechanical equipment throughout the processing facility.

A mechanical equipment register was compiled, documenting the condition of the equipment together with supporting photographic records.

Recommended spare parts were identified and included in the assessment documentation.

This information provided an asset-condition baseline for further maintenance, refurbishment and plant improvement planning.

Technical Challenges & Project Highlights

Existing Plant Engineering Information

The assessment involved an existing processing facility with engineering documentation originally prepared in Russian.

Interpreting and converting this information into English was an important step in establishing an accessible and consistent engineering reference for subsequent project activities.

Comprehensive Digital Representation of the Facility

The development of a complete three-dimensional virtual plant model was a significant project deliverable.

The use of laser scanning and interactive walkthrough functionality provided a practical means of examining plant layouts and spatial arrangements without relying exclusively on conventional two-dimensional drawings.

Automation of an Existing Processing Plant

The development of an automation concept for an existing operating facility required consideration of the installed equipment and available engineering information.

The audit established the technical information needed to support future automation design and plant improvement initiatives aimed at achieving nameplate operating capacity.

Mechanical Equipment Condition & Asset Management

The condition assessment combined equipment identification, photographic documentation and recommended spare parts information.

This structured approach provided Stark Resources with information relevant to equipment maintenance, refurbishment planning and future plant reliability improvements.

Successful Completion of the Engineering Audit

Eptoscore completed the engineering site audit and technical assessment within the agreed project schedule.

The resulting engineering documentation, digital plant model, concept designs and equipment assessment records enabled Stark Resources to progress its concept design and informed subsequent project execution activities.

The assignment demonstrates capabilities in multidisciplinary engineering site audits, digital plant surveying, 3D modelling, industrial automation concept development and mechanical asset-condition assessment.
